Who knew that I would find myself sitting here and writing about fashion. If you knew me, you would know that I like what I like, I’m not really into brands and my preferred outfit consists of leggings and my favorite track hoodie from high school. Let’s be honest most of the “fashionable” items I usually wear belong to my sister or were bought and given to me by my sister (thank you for my wardrobe by the way bib). Well, with all of that said, fashion has recently inspired me.
This past weekend, I had the honor of attending the 2013 RVA Fashion Week Designer Showcase to support one of my dear friends, Candace Parrish, and her line Coeur du Rouge (Heart the Red). Now this is not just any clothing line, it’s an inspiration. Her all red collection represents the struggle of women battling heart disease. On behalf of the American Heart Association, Candace used her passion and talent to create pieces of fashion that were not only fierce to the eye, but compelling to the heart. I loved it. I absolutely loved it.
I would describe Candace as a true designer with purpose. Her passion of fashion only compliments her desire to help others and bring awareness to issues such as heart disease. I can remember nights after class when she told me she was heading to buy more fabric and would be up all night sewing. Take in mind, we are in graduate school, hold jobs and have personal lives; BUT she found the time. She was even featured by WTVR CBS 6 News ‘Virginia This Morning’ where she spoke on the importance of her garments as well as highlighted Andrea Flanary Woie, a heart attack survivor who she featured in her showcase.
Candace’s God given talent is oh so evident in every single piece of the design and she has truly inspired me. There is just something about seeing someone else make such an impact on those around them. I was overwhelmed with joy when I saw the models strut all the pieces I know that Candace had worked so hard to finish. And even with last minute glitches, Candace finished off the showcase with a bang and I was proud to stand on my feet, clap and say “that’s my friend.”
Take a look at the video below showcasing her AMAZING collection, Coeur du Rouge (Someone dear to your heart might even make a special appearance in the video *wink wink*):
Now ask yourself, “Is there someone in your life that is making a difference in the lives of others that you can time the time to support as well?”
MY CHOICE: To support a friend and become inspired by something that I might not have if I had not made the decision to do so.
YOUR CHALLENGE: Support one of your friends in one of their personal endeavors and find a new inspiration.
