“Show the world your guns! A good cardio workout can do wonders for your mind and body. My new love is boxing. After a long day of work and class, I turn up the music and start jabbing away. It’s intense, but fun and even when I get tired, I don’t want to stop. What gets you moving?”- Bri
Tough. Quick. Strong. My new love. Boxing.
Did you know that April is Stress Awareness Month? Well, what are some ways that you cope with stress? I box.
I started boxing in January 2013 when I bought myself a striking bag and some gloves. Just imagine me, someone who has never boxed a day in her life jump into such a “sport.” In fact, when I first set up my striking bag, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I knew absolutely nothing about boxing other than what I had seen on TV or in the movies. Well, I take that back; my cousin Willie tried to teach me how to fight when we were younger, but he told me I was “too slow” haha.
After much YouTube and Google researching (never fails me), I was able to find numerous workout routines for my specific striking bag. Let’s just say my first workout was hilarious nonetheless. Over time, I gained more endurance, skill and overall form. Front jabs and shuffling the body all became somewhat normal. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not a pro and there are numerous things I need to work on, but I am having so much fun learning along the way. In addition, when I box, I am able to evoke emotions; I can often feel stress and tension leaving my body. I remember nights after working two jobs, coming home at 10PM, going into our workout room, turning on the music and just starting to punch the bag. It served as my outlet. By trying something new, I have found something that I will probably continue for the rest of my life!
MY CHOICE: To step out of my norm and try something new. I box!
