Taste of Charleston
How many people can say they actually “tasted” Charleston, South Carolina? Well this past weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Taste of Charleston hosted by Southern Living Magazine and let me tell you, it was absolutely delicious!
DISCLAIMER: I enjoyed myself 100%, so don’t judge me on my MANY, probably not so healthy food choices! 🙂
The weekend was full of a wide range of events including boat rides, an iron chef competition, wine and beer tastings, food, food and MORE food. From gumbo to shrimp creole, I was surrounded by some of the freshest, most delicious seafood dishes ever. Not to mention one my new favorites, the fried green tomatoes stack with crab meat appetizer The Fleet Landing restaurant ! Isn’t it just gorgeous?
The main event on Sunday took place at Boone Hall Plantation (an amazing historical plantation)–Did I mention there were about 50 restaurants?! Some of the other dishes I tasted included she crab soup, bacon wrapped shrimp stuffed with crab meat and scallops, gneechi wings (special sauce) and black eyed peas fried rice and steak with chimichurri sauce and pimento grits. I even tasted a little bit of peach and blueberry sangria!
Other than the main Taste of Charleston events, I was able to venture off and try what is referred to as the “Gullah Cuisine,” in which I fell in love with immediately. I even had the honor of meeting, the owner and chef of the Gullah Cuisine restaurant, Charlotte Jenkins! My meal consistent of three succulent and juicy oxtails, homemade macaroni and cheese, collard greens and their special Gullah rice with sausage, shrimp and chicken! Let’s just say, although I wanted to, I DID NOT finish it all in one sitting.
To be absolutely honest, Charleston reminded me a lot of New Orleans with a real southern, down to earth, care-free feel, but one thing I can say is that it was a beautiful and hey it didn’t taste so bad either! I will definitely be taking another trip there again in the future! :p
