What Healthy Hair Products Should You Use ?

If you don’t know what healthy hair products to use have no fear! I am going to teach you how to find the best products for your hair concerns, and your hair porosity.

If you are confused and don’t know what those 2 things I just listed above are or why they are important, today is your lucky day, I am going to explain it to you!

What is Hair Porosity?

“Hair porosity is a measurement of the hair’s ability to absorb and hold moisture. It can also be described as the indicator of how easily moisture can penetrate the hair.

This is what your hair strand looks like under a microscope

Hair porosity is largely determined by genetics, but can also be altered by external factors such as heat and chemical processing.

Finding your hair porosity is just one step of selecting the best products for your hair.

What is High Porosity Hair?

High porosity hair means that your hair cuticles have too much space in between allowing products and water (moisture) to get in easily but also leaving your hair quickly.

If you have high porosity hair, your hair may absorb water (moisture) very quickly but lose it very quickly. High porosity hair has a hard time retaining moisture due to genetics or to damaged hair.

This is what your hair strand looks like under a microscope with high hair porosity

If you think you have high porosity hair, your hair may:

.look frizzy

.feel dry

.absorb water very quickly

.dry very quickly

.be prone to breakage

What is Low Porosity Hair?

Low porosity hair means that your hair cuticles overlap each other tightly making it hard for anything to get in, like water (moisture) or products. Low porosity hair is most of the time due to genetics.

If you have low porosity hair, your hair may take a while to absorb water (moisture) or any products.

This is what your hair strand looks like under a microscope with low hair porosity

This can be a problem because your products and water can sit on top of your hair surface without penetrating your hair cuticle which is what you want for healthy shiny hair.

With low porosity hair, your hair may:

.take a long time to get wet

.take a long time to dry

.look dry

.have product sits on the surface

How do I Find My Hair Porosity?

There is a simple test that you could do to see what type of hair porosity you have.

Step 1

Fill a clear glass bowl or cup with water

Step 2

Place a strand of your hair in the cup or bowl of water

Step 3

Watch how fast your hair strand sinks to the bottom of the bowl or cup

Hair Porosity Test

Results :

If your hair sank to the bottom quickly, that means you most likely have high porosity hair. Your hair strand allowed water (moisture) in quickly so it sank fast.

If your hair sits at the top of the bowl or cup for a while before sinking, that means you most likely have low porosity hair. Your hair strand took a while to allow in water (moisture) so it sat at the top.

Now if only part of the hair strand sank fast but the rest of your hair sat on top for a while, you could have both!

For me this rang true, some parts of my hair were damaged more than others so when I did this hair strand test, one end of my hair floated for a while and the other half sank fast!

(It’s probably due to the fact that I had started my hair health journey by growing out my bleach, the bleached part sank fast since it was damaged and my roots were low porosity !)

Hair Concerns

It is no secret that everyone has different hair types. Based on genetics we all have our own mixture of curly/wavy/straight hair!

If you want to get fancy and know the exact type your hair is, you can look at this hair type chart listed below

Different Hair Type Strands

The key to finding products for your hair type/concerns is really simple. Look for products that address your concerns.

For example, if you have fine and straight hair you want products that are lightweight.

If you were to put thick and heavy products on your thin hair, it could weigh it down and look unflattering.

If you have thick hair and tried using lightweight products, it might not be as moisturizing or effective for your hair type.

The best advice that I can give you is to research your hair type and concerns so that you can decipher what products work best.

Healthy Hair Products I Recommend

Now that I have taught you how to find your hair porosity and hair concerns, go ahead and check out my blog How To Create A Healthy Hair Routine 2023 where I teach you how to create your own healthy hair care routine that is personalized to you.

Now time to talk about the products that I recommend for my hair type and concerns. My hair is a mixture of wavy and straight so I had a hard time finding products that addressed both types.

At the beginning of my hair health journey, I had very damaged, frizzy, and dry straight hair.

This is what my hair looked like before using healthy hair products.
This is a real example of my hair a few years ago before I started my hair health journey.

As a child, I had some sort of thickness to my hair with waves and a couple of winglet curls underneath.

If this sounds like you at all these are the products that I use currently that have improved my hair.

My hair transformed when I started using Healthy Hair Products
This is what my hair looks like straightened today

If you want to learn more about how I transformed my hair, go ahead and check out my blog post Healthy Hair Tips then you can go and read my other blog where I teach you How To Create Your Healthy Hair Routine that is personalized to you. How To Create Your Healthy Hair Routine

Healthy Hair Product #1

Strengthening Shampoo

I have tried many strengthening shampoos and the ones that I love the most are the Olaplex bond maintenance shampoo and the Pureology Strength Cure Shampoo.

I have been switching these 2 products back and forth because I love them so much!

The reason I use a strengthening shampoo is because I have bleached hair that is frizzy, thin, dry, and prone to breakage.

This is where your hair porosity is important to know.

If you have high hair porosity, you more than likely should be using some form of strengthening shampoo.

These shampoos have protein that helps build the bonds of your hair back together making your hair cuticles tighter than they were before with high hair porosity

Healthy Hair Product #2

Clarifying Shampoo

I have tried a couple of clarifying shampoos here and there but my favorite out of the ones I’ve tried is the Ouai Clarifying Shampoo.

It smells amazing and lathers up nicely with water. The Ouai Clarifying shampoo leaves my scalp feeling clean but moisturized and not stripped of my natural oils. My hair looks and feels clean and refreshed after using this product.

Healthy Hair Product #3

Hair mask / Conditioner

I wash my hair only a couple times a week so when I get my “everything” shower, I tend to use my deep conditioning hair masks. I will use regular conditioner every now and then for no rhyme or reason.

The top hair masks that I recommend are Ouai deep conditioning hair mask, Any Shea moisture conditioning mask, and Bondi boost miracle mask.

Healthy Hair Product #4

Hair oils

I use hair oils before my shower, after my shower, and days between my shower. This is an important step in my hair health journey and my hair routine. I have a blog that goes into detail of How you can create a healthy hair routine

Before my shower, I may do things differently every time. Sometimes I put coconut oil on the ends before I wash my hair, or sometimes I will put rosemary oil on my scalp for scalp health before my shower.

After my shower, I use jojoba oil on my ends to lock in moisture.  In between showers, I use lightweight oil on the mids and ends of my hair. I use Ouai Hair Oil.

Healthy Hair Product #5

Leave in Conditioner

When my hair was on the thinner side my hair LOVED the Ouai leave in spray. Their leave-in spray is very lightweight and again all their products smell amazing!

Once my hair started getting thicker I switched the Ouai leave in spray for the Shea Moisture Intensive hydration leave in which also smells amazing!

Healthy Hair Product #6

Heat Protectants

Currently, I have been using the sun bum heat protectant. I am in love with this product! It smells amazing, like being at the beach, and leaves my hair extra shiny. It protects my hair and gets the job done!

Healthy Hair Product #7

Brushes For Healthy Hair

When I brush my hair, I use a wooden brush or wooden comb, I think I am currently using a wooden brush that I bought off Amazon. Using a wooden brush helps distribute the natural oils on your scalp throughout your hair. The wooden brush also creates less static and friction as you brush through, unlike a plastic brush. Bamboo brushes are also considered “wooden” brushes.

Conclusion

So there you have it, my top 7 products that I recommended from my healthy hair journey that could transform your hair as well!

Clean Eating Tips For Beginners

April 25, 2023

Today I will be giving you 9 Clean Eating Tips For Beginners. If you don’t know what clean eating is or how to do it, today is your lucky day!

What is Clean Eating?

Clean eating is on the rise to become the most popular way of eating. If you don’t know what clean eating is or how to do it, then go ahead and stick around.

“Clean eating is all about eliminating most processed foods and switching them out for Whole Foods .”

No, you do not have to stop eating meat and no you do not have to follow a specific diet. Clean eating gets confused as being a diet when in reality it is a lifestyle.

I first began to be interested in clean eating because I was having some unexplained health issues and I’m 21. Normally at my age, we don’t really struggle with health issues.

Clean Eating Tips For Beginners #1 in priority is eat from home. Cook your own meals.

I got tired of numerous doctors telling me that everything is fine and that I have nothing to worry about but I continued to listen to my body and continued to research and that is when I stumbled across the idea of eating clean.

It has taken me a while to get started but it has been totally worth it to see some of my health issues and anxiety fade. Now don’t get me wrong, they are not completely gone, but most days I do feel better than I used to when I was eating out all of the time.

Clean Eating Tips For Beginners

So if you are anything like me and you have no idea where to start, I have listed below some tips and tricks that I wish someone had given me at the beginning of my clean eating journey.

Clean Eating Tips For Beginners #1

Find your reason why you want to eat clean

This is the first thing that has helped me stick to clean eating was to find my reason why and remind myself of it when things got difficult.

Go ahead and think about the reason why you want to start eating clean.

Whatever that reason is, write it down on a piece of paper so you can go back and read it when you forget why you started eating clean in the first place.

Clean Eating Tips For Beginners #2

Find Inspiration for Clean Eating

Another thing that I think is really important is to find inspiration. Find some social media enthusiasts that post about food and post recipes for clean eating.

You can go on Pinterest, YouTube, and Instagram or there is an app called Tasty, and find plenty of people who post clean recipes for you to try.

My favorite inspiration right now is Steph Robinnson on Instagram. She posts a lot of GF (gluten-free) recipes and recipes using whole food ingredients.

Clean Eating Tips For Beginners #3

Meal plan

This next tip has helped me tremendously when it comes to clean eating.

First I will choose a day to sit down and get my meal inspirations from the many apps I mentioned previously and to find meals that I know will work for me and my family.

If you would like to see some of the most loved clean-eating recipes that I have tried along my journey, go ahead and check out my blog post “Clean Eating Recipes”

Next, I will try to find meals with similar ingredients that will help me save time and money when meal planning and prepping.

Clean Eating Tips For Beginners #4

Grocery tips/ How to save Money with Clean Eating

Where To Shop?

Depending on what your budget is, anywhere you shop would work. But if you are like me and you are trying to save every penny possible, I defiantly recommend using Kroger.

I am not getting paid for sponsoring Kroger, I only mention it because that is what I use every time and I genuinely love it.

If you don’t know what Kroger is, it is an online grocery store where you can order groceries and have them delivered to your house at a scheduled date and time that works for you.

How To Save Money?

I recommend signing up for the Kroger membership because you will end up saving money in the long run.

For example, my family and I order Kroger once a week because that is what works for us. We use to pay anywhere from $6 -$10 a week for just shipping our groceries.

In clean eating tips for beginners, I teach you how to shop smarter and save money

If you signed up for the membership you would be paying around $50 a year in total for shipping. You do the math, it is a no-brainer!

Now some of you might be questioning “Why would I pay to ship my groceries when I could drive and get them myself?” If that is you, that is a great question!

Before my family and I switched to Kroger, we shopped at Publix.

Let’s just say that at Publix, it would be around $80 for 12 items in my cart whereas Kroger would be $70 for 20 items or more in my cart depending on what you buy, plus $6 -$10 shipping if you didn’t have the membership.

If you have a membership, your shipping is free.

With my family’s busy schedule, we love that we can pick and choose a date that works for us for our groceries to be delivered.

We found that buying non-perishable items work best on Kroger and we buy our perishable items like fruit and veggies at a physical store so that we can pick them out ourselves to prevent wasting fruits and veggies.

Clean Eating Tips For Beginners #5

Cravings

Give into those cravings sometimes! If you starve your cravings it will be that much harder to stick to a meal plan.

If your body is used to eating junk and processed foods, you kinda have to wean your body off of it in order to not get those cravings as often.

What I have found that helps me when I am craving junk or dessert (especially around that time of the month) I like to have a healthier snack or dessert option that will still satisfy that craving but have more health benefits than eating a bunch of processed foods.

In my blog “Clean Eating Recipes” I have healthier dessert options if you want to check those out!

Clean Eating Tips For Beginners #6

Allergies/Intolerances

This one is so important to consider when finding meals for you and your family. For example, is you have an intolerance to Gluten or dairy, there are many recipes for you.

If you think you have allergies or intolerance pay attention to how you feel after you eat certain foods and try getting tested for any food allergies.

This will make clean eating for you that much easier and worth it.

Another tip from clean eating tips for beginners, finding out if you have any food allergies is so important.

Clean Eating Tips For Beginners #7

All bodies are different

There is not one specific “diet” that you need to follow. All bodies are different and our bodies respond differently to certain ingredients. Pay attention to what foods make you feel good or bad.

Clean eating is all about eliminating most processed foods and switching them out for Whole Foods.

Examples of Whole Foods:

.Seeds and Nuts

.Whole grains

.Sauces made from scratch

.Fruit

.Vegetables

.Anything plant-based and farm-raised

Examples of Processed Foods:

.Added Sugars

.Artificial Dyes

.Canned Fruits or Veggies

.Certain cheeses

.white bread

Clean Eating Tips For Beginners #8

Limit Eating Out

This should be something that we make a habit. Eating out is not only expensive but it affects our health in a bad way.

We have no idea what is being put into our food let alone how processed things are.

The more you cook your own food, the better off you will be in “clean eating”. My family and I schedule one day a week for eating out, sometimes 2 days a week depending on the events we have going on.

This has helped us save money and has made it easier to want to eat clean. We don’t feel as restricted as we would be if we cut eating out completely at first.

Clean Eating Tips For Beginners #9

Start a Garden

If you really want to control the foods you eat and what goes into your body, try starting a garden.

I am a beginner gardener and I love the idea of going back to our roots as hunters and gatherers. If you think about it, having a garden and hunting your own food is how our ancestors survived back in the day.

They didn’t have all the options we have now at the tip of our fingers. Our ancestors would eat whatever was in season. If you wanted to take an extra step, then you could plant fruits and veggies seasonally and plan meals around it haha!

Conclusion

If you made it to the end, you now know 9 tips and tricks to help you start and stick with eating clean.

  1. Find Your Reason Why
  2. Find Inspiration
  3. Meal Plan
  4. Grocery Tips/Saving Money
  5. Cravings
  6. Allergies/Intolerances
  7. All Bodies Are Different
  8. Limit Eating Out

Healthy Hair Tips

April 24, 2023

Let me start off by saying ALL hair is different. There is not one category that you can put your hair type in and define. The quicker you know that, the quicker you will get to healthy hair.

From someone who has experimented with their hair more times than I can count, I have learned some things that damage your hair.  So I am here today to hopefully give you some helpful tips and tricks when it comes to hair health.

Healthy Hair Myths

1. Expensive Products For Healthy Hair

The first Healthy hair myth is that it has been rumored that you need expensive products for healthy hair and that is a lie!

I have tried MANY products all ranging in price and I am currently using Shea Moisture as one of my go-to products. Shea Moisture is one of the most affordable products among the ones I’ve tried. Most of the expensive products you find today are just charging you for their packaging and marketing.

However, you should stay away from some products due to the ingredients inside them. Some ingredients can be harmful to you and your hair.

If you want to check out what products I recommend you can find my blog post at the bottom of this post.

2. Washing your Hair Often

I want to go ahead and bust this myth. Yes, it may work for some people but it doesn’t work for everyone. I know someone who washes their hair every day once or twice a day and they have beautiful long, healthy, shiny hair!

It all depends on how your hair responds. I will say that I go 2 days without washing since I have bleach in my hair. Washing your hair often with bleach has its downsides so I try to prolong washing my hair.

At the end of the day, you pay attention to how your hair responds and then you can adjust. Hair training is a thing for those who don’t have an overly oily scalp.

For me, I have a normal amount of oil on my scalp but after 2 days my hair just looks gross and dry and it needs a refresh.

Healthy Hair Tips

1. Heat protectant

In middle school and high school, I straightened my hair every day with no heat protectant!

I went through a stage where I didn’t like my waves or the few little ringlets that I had underneath.

I used heat every day on my hair with no heat protectant and this is what is did to my hair. Use heat protectant for healthy hair.
This is a real photo of my hair when I used to straighten it every day with no heat protectant.

At first, I saw no damage because I was blind to it, after years of using no heat protectant my hair became so thin and fragile, I had spots that were thinned out from constantly using heat with no protection. The waves and curls in my hair were so damaged that they didn’t even show.

Now I rarely use heat, and I always use a heat protectant! I have noticed such a difference in my hair health since doing this. I know it’s hard not using heat, trust me I’ve been there. Anytime I have flyways, bumps, or flaws, I just wanted to fix it with my straightener.

Please take it from my experience that it will be worth it to cut back on heat styling, I promise once you start taking care of your hair, you won’t even need to use heat.

2. Protective Hairstyles For Healthy Hair

Claw clips are making a huge comeback and I am all for it! Claw clips are the easiest and most protective hairstyle to wear throughout the day.

Those tight hairstyles and braids are temping sometimes, I know all about those. I use to play Softball for years and my go-to hairstyles were very tight and I ended up creating bald spots and a receding hairline because of it!

Protective hair styles are important for you to achieve healthy hair because you could cause damage if you dont.
I wore tight braids that would give me bald spots and a receding hairline

Ever since using protective hairstyles in my hair, I’ve noticed a difference in where my hair was balding and receding, my hair has come back and thickened over those spots since starting my healthy hair journey.

A few protective styles I recommend are the claw clips during the day or wearing them down . If you want to tie your hair up and back, I suggest using silk scrunchies.

When you tie your hair back try not to tie it in the same place over and over again really tightly.

This will create friction and breakage where you tie your scrunchies at. At night time try not to go to bed with your hair wet. Wear your hair in a loose braid or twist it when going to sleep.

If you want to take it a little further, I suggest using a silk pillowcase. Now using the pillowcase does have it’s benefits but it will not make your hair overall “healthier” if not used with other techniques that I’ve mentioned.

3. Skip the Bleach

Now when I say skip the bleach, I don’t mean to totally get rid of it. I still bleach my hair but there are some tips to keep your hair healthy while using bleach.

Natural hair is always going to look best on you, it was how you were born! I get it though, I love to have different styles and looks which is why I still use bleach.

I used to use bleach almost once a month! That is HORRIBLE for your hair and I have pictures to prove it. When bleaching your hair you want to find a hair stylist who cares about the integrity of your hair and not just about getting paid the big bucks.

Using bleach very often killed my hair. If you want healthy hair, you should space out how often you bleach.
Scroll down to see my Healthy Hair 2 years after this picture!

Be patient when trying to go lighter, if you go too light in one sitting, you can really fry and damage your hair even if you don’t see it to begin with.

I would say wait at least 6 weeks before getting bleach again. Now going 6 weeks is hard when you have a hairstyle that has a lot of upkeep.

That’s why when I get my hair done, I opt for hairstyles with low maintenance levels. With low maintenance, you are not having to go back to the salon as often depending on what you get.

2 year healthy hair transformation.
2 years later I still use bleach but I was able to repair my hair from bleach damage

4. Your Diet

This last tip has been the most beneficial to my hair health journey. I would not skip this step because it is so important.

Before I took my overall health seriously, I ate out at restaurants almost every day! I didn’t care what I was eating and it definitely had a toll on my hair.

This past year I have watched how my diet including my other healthy hair tips transformed my hair. My hair started getting thicker and naturally wavy again!

My natural waves are starting to come back!

5. Hair Trims For Healthy Hair

I know, I know, for those of you trying to grow your hair out, I know that this is the last thing that you want to do, but it is also one of the most important things to do when striving for healthier hair.

Some of you may be wondering how trimming your hair can make your hair healthier. When you don’t trim your hair, you are leaving your split ends on your head.

When you don’t cut the split ends off, they will travel all the way up your hair strand and the longer you go in between trims, the longer your split ends will keep traveling up and damaging your hair all over your head. You can tell if you have split ends if your hair gets tangled really easily.

When you have dead ends, it is harder for you to grow your hair long because your hair will just keep breaking off. There is not one product that will get rid of your split ends or damaged hair completely so you should be trimming your hair every 6 – 12 weeks to maintain healthy hair.

6. Microfiber Towel

If you’ve never heard of a microfiber towel, this is something that I would invest in to have healthier hair. A microfiber towel is a towel with microfiber material designed to help prevent any breakage or extra friction when drying your hair.

When your hair is wet, your hair is at its most fragile state, so if you were to use a regular towel roughly, it would create frizz, breakage, and split ends over time.

7. Brushing

Brushing hair is one of the most common causes of hair breakage, especially when using plastic brushes. Before brushing your hair, try to detangle it with your fingers the best you can. Adding a leave-in conditioner will help with this step tremendously.

When brushing your hair, be sure to start at the bottom of your hair and work your way up, gently detangling the knots as you go. The faster you brush, the more friction you will cause, and when using a plastic brush creates even more friction and static.

8. Water Temperature

When washing your hair, using hot water can do more harm than good to your hair. When I started using lukewarm/ cool water to rinse my hair, I noticed how much more hydrated, shiny, and smooth my hair was!

Using cooler water to rinse your hair prevents frizzy hair and helps lock in moisture which is important for your hair health.

9. Protein vs. Moisture

When looking for products make sure you have a balance of products that are to repair your hair and to moisturize your hair. If you have too much protein in your hair/products, it could cause your hair to dry or break.
